DIY Doctor hosts advertising for many businesses. What is marketing?

A very quick definition of marketing is Getting enough information from your customers to put the right product, in the right place, at the right time, for the right price. Marketing is not just advertising (or Badvertising) and selling. It is about what customers want. Historically marketers set out to give customer satisfaction but to be a company that stands out from the crowd you have to look to not just satisfying customers, but delighting them.

Did you know that one of the largest Bathroom Suppliers in the country simply leaves a champagne cork in the bottom of every bath in the showroom. The viewing customer can then recognise the opportunity of sitting in the bath and relaxing with their preferred drink.

Techniques like this have been used for many years. The smell of fresh coffee, or baking bread as you walk into the kitchen showroom. Moving products to different store areas to make customers walk past a new range. All excellent marketing techniques that provide the customer with the things they want.

The cost of gettiing customers

A one-man or woman band can use marketing as effectively as a large company. It's just a question of knowing where to start. These pages will help with that process. When you market your business there is little doubt some advertising will be required and our first tip deals with this. Where do you advertise ? How do you know its working?

When you place an advert, anywhere, you should be able to measure the results of your outlay. There is no point renewing advertising that is not working for you. If you have placed an advert in the local (or National) newspapers or magazines you should ask every single person who rings: "Where did you find out about our company?". This information should be logged and measured over, say, 3 months. If one of your ads is not working - Drop it!

How about this for a simple, inexpensive tip. Get your logo and website printed on your envelopes. Its not rocket science. Every postman sees it, every customer sees it. It's professional and it works.
