20 N per square mm is equivalent to 2kg force on each square mm which seems like rather a lot. It is equivalent to 2 million kg on each square metre or 2000 tons. Is there something amiss with my arithmetic?

It’s perfectly correct and don’t foget that, although you are unlikely to get 2000 tonnes applied to any 1 square m of concrete, there are huge forces in opeartion from ground movement and when these are applied to a house, sitting on a 150mm floor slab, it’s integrity needs to remain!
