A Japanese company called Kyosemi have developed an intriguing solar design – the Sphelar – which is a spherical cell capable of absorbing light from any direction. So these tiny cells are far more efficient than flat solar cells as they are are not reliant on the sun’s position, and they are only 1-2mm in diameter!
The Sphelar cells could be the way forward in solar power for buildings as the cells can be embedded in glass which would provide a transparent solar cell window for storing energy. It is also versatile in it’s potential applications as it is possible to use the cells in flexible surfaces too……. the possibilities sound endless!
