DIY Doctor wants to be the UK’s leading resource for the protection of anyone who is employing a builder against rogue traders.

Home owners lose millions of pounds by employing cowboy builders, and we want to help you to root out the bad guys and find your self a reliable, conscientious and honest builder. There are a lot of them out there but they are not as newsworthy, sadly.

The government endorsed scheme, TrustMark, is also committed to finding ways to make the building industry better regulated, and therefore safer for the consumer in terms of getting the job they pay for. They only register insured tradespeople who are members of a trade body. You can find a registered tradesman on the DIY Doctor find a tradesman section.

TrustMark have reinforced their consumer commitments in their latest newsletter, and these include:

A key commitment to “Improve the image of the industry… through… improving performance in the domestic repair and maintenance market.”

A research report looking into international licensing schemes for tradesmen has said that “there was no one size that fits all approach” but it did identify a number of desirable features common to all effective schemes, and TrustMark displays many of those features.

The Government has firmly stated its commitment to TrustMark: “This strategy commits to expanding the benefits of TrustMark such that it includes a far greater proportion of the industry.”

The Action Plan highlights that “TrustMark will be re-launched, with new standards and full support from trade bodies, consumer organisations and Government”

The chairman of TrustMark is appointed to the Construction Leadership Council to drive forward implementation of the strategy.

DIY Doctor has a 5-step programme to help you employ a tradesman and to have a great experience rather than a drama. DIY Doctor’s Home Improver’s Protection Solution has been created by builders and experienced home improvers together, after two years of research and surveys. It includes lots of help and information and most of the resources are completely free.

Mike Edwards from DIY Doctor says “If you are considering building an extension we suggest you start by using the free version of Price Doctor to get a quote, or check your existing quote, and continue from there using our Desired Outcome Contract and the Escrow-style payment scheme to protect your money.”
