Do you know what a TRV is?

The term TRV stands for Thermostatic Radiator Valve. This type of valve senses the temperature in the room and automatically turns  the flow of the heating hot water on and off, to keep the temperature in the room even, all the while the heating is turned on at the boiler.

TRVs allow you to regulate the temperature in each room, rather than the whole house, so you can just have a frost setting in spare bedrooms or other less-used rooms in the house, while maintaining a higher temperature in more frequently-used areas, such as your sitting room.

This will allow you to save money by only heating the areas of the house that you need to for comfort, while ensuring that if temperatures plummet you will still have some residual heat in the rooms you are not using.

If you do not have TRVs fitted on your radiators then you can turn off the radiators in rooms that are not being used, but you should be careful to check for problems such as condensation in corners and to air the room from time to time.

If temperatures reach freezing we would recommend that you do heat all the rooms in your house to avoid problems with freezing pipes and the ensuing burst pipe problems.

What is a Lockshield Valve?

A Lockshield Valve tightens up to prevent the water coming into the radiator. There is a cap on the lockshield valve that simply pulls off. You will then see a slot in the head to turn the valve on and off, although some will only have a spindle that can be opened and closed using a wrench or adjustable spanner.

A lockshield valve is either on or off and does not regulate the temperature of the radiator.

Radiator Drain Plug

Some lockshield radiator valves also have a drain plug which allows you easily drain down the heating system for maintenance. You can attach a length of drain pipe to the valve and run it outside into a drain and then open up the drain valve to allow water to drain out of the heating system.

If you have used a scale inhibitor in your heating system you should check the manufacturer’s instructions for disposing of the water in your heating system.
