Modern Bathroom Modernising Your Bathroom

The bathroom is a place in which many of us spend quite a lot of time. From getting ready for work in the morning, to washing away the cares of the day before bedtime, it plays an important role in our daily routine. Yet some of us are still living with outdated, ugly looking bathrooms. We may not even realise the effect that waking up to an ugly bathroom is having on our overall mood. But never fear – there are lots of different ways to update and improve the look of your bathroom, giving it a fresh, modern look which you’ll be able to enjoy, every day.

Step One: Deep Clean
We all clean our bathrooms, but how many of us get to those really stubborn spots? Places like behind the toilet and underneath the rim of the sink are prime places for dirt to collect. Before modernising your bathroom, make sure you get into all of those hard-to-reach places with a good, bleach-based bathroom cleaner.

Step Two: Wash the Windows
Windows let light into our home, and dirty windows will prevent this from happening. To modernise and freshen up your bathroom, you should make good use of natural light by allowing as much to come in as possible.

Step Three: Replace Old Flooring
Like it or not, bathroom floors are a prime place for germs to collect, and, unless your bathroom floor is perfectly tiled and easy to keep clean, you may wish to consider replacing your bathroom floor every few years. Laminate flooring is an inexpensive option and incredibly easy to lay. Not only that, but it will give your bathroom an ultra modern look.

Step Four: It’s All About Accessories
Modern bathroom design is all about accessorising. Bathrooms often end up being strewn with towels, soaps, toothbrushes etc., and if you can manage to co-ordinate these items your bathroom will look ten times better. Match your towels to your bath mat and, if you have one, shower curtain.

Step Five: Lighting
Lighting can make all the difference to your bathroom, so make sure your bathroom is lit as well as possible by installing a mixture of spotlights, downlights and even illuminated mirrors & bathroom cabinets. Not only should your bathroom lighting make your bathroom look great, but it should also make you look great. For extra points, install a dimmer switch so you can create a romantic atmosphere for those cosy evenings in.

Step Six: Storage Solutions
As mentioned above, bathrooms have a habit of getting messy. And if there’s more than two people in the house, this mess can sometimes get out of control. This is where great bathroom storage comes in. Modern bathrooms tend to integrate storage into the overall design layout, sinking sinks into cupboards and hiding cabinets behind sleek, sliding mirrors.

Step Seven: Keep it Simple
This is less of a step, and more of an injunction. If you want to make your bathroom look as modern as possible, it’s best to keep your design simple. Decals on tiles are dated, as are floral wallpapers, and too many colours will make your bathroom look agitated and over-busy. If you want to incorporate colour into your bathroom, do so in a way which won’t dominate the room. Soft colours can be used throughout, as long as they are complimentary, but bold colours should only be used as accents or features. And anything which can be put away, should be. Linens, towels, bottles, lotions, medicines – all of these things will make your bathroom look cluttered if left lying around. So make sure your bathroom storage is adequate, and make sure you have a good clean out on a regular basis.

We get asked lots of questions about Noisy Pipes and other plumbing problems in our forum section on the website.

We are always happy to get questions on anything to do with the house and home but it is worth searching in our projects section first to see if the answer to your question is already detailed there.

We spend a lot of time checking with our users what you find useful and interesting, and we are always pleased to hear from you with suggestions of new projects, go to our ‘Contact Us’ page and send us your ideas.

Noisy pipes can be caused by Water Hammer, where vibrations build up in the water valve in your water tank or cistern.

Solving problems with noisy pipes

There is more information about this plumbing problem on our Noisy Pipe Project Page, but in a nutshell this is what you need to do.

  • The first thing to do is to make sure the pipe is fixed securely, because pipes can vibrate if they are not properly secured.
  • Install an equilibrium valve in your water storage tank. These noise reducing valves are very effective and they are not expensive.
  • or you can use a yoghurt carton! This may sound strange and wacky but it is a low cost solution to the problem. To find out how it works click on the link below.

Shower curtains are easily one of the most neglected interior design elements in your house – and for a good reason. Hung up in a place where most people tend not to linger (or keep them drawn aside when they do), they’re unlikely to attract compliments from your guests.

Your shower curtains can however be a key design element and a great conversation starter – all it takes is a little simple stencilling! Here are the 4 steps to adding a stencil design to your current shower curtain…

1. Check for Mould

Remove the shower curtain from the shower rod (or its rings) and inspect it carefully for any signs of mould and mildew as you’ll need to get rid of them before you carry on decorating.

Wash the curtain in your washing machine (at a low temperature and gentle settings for plastic and vinyl curtains), adding ½ cup baking soda for the wash cycle and ½ cup vinegar for the rinse.

Hang it and leave to dry naturally. You can prevent the build-up of mould and mildew by wiping the curtains off after every use and spraying them with a water/vinegar mixture.

2. Choose Your Design

While the curtain is left drying, you can decide on the pattern. Once you’ve made your choice, make sure to size it right and print it onto regular paper. To make it sturdy, glue it to a sheet of card and use a sharp crafting knife to cut the pattern away and leave a stencil.

If you’re a new to stencilling, don’t opt for designs or motifs that are too complicated not only because simplicity is the ultimate sophistication but also to cut down on the numerous possibilities one may go wrong.

Start with something simple and mono-coloured and don’t be afraid to work some humour into it, too. Some bathers seem to have developed a weird passion for silhouettes of people holding a knife!

3. Prepare the Curtain

Once the curtain has dried, spread it out on a large and flat surface, smoothing out any wrinkles. Pick out waterproof fabric paints and choose a brush for your selected pattern – a smaller one will let you create more elaborate details while the larger brushes or even paint rollers are good for evenly covering large portions of the curtains.

4. Get Painting

Press the stencil firmly to fabric and tape down to avoid it slipping and ruining the design. Carefully work the paint into the curtain from one corner towards the other so that you don’t accidently rest your arm on wet paint as you go!

Once finished, let the curtains dry. Place a clean cloth over the design and run an iron over it to heat-set the paint, and your custom-designed curtain is ready!

If you’re looking to go even further customising your bathroom decor, why not play around with the shower rod, varying with the ring designs or even adding chains to your curtain. There are plenty of ideas out there to make your bathroom look like no other!

What innovative shower curtain designs have you seen lately?

This is not a sexy subject, but it is one of those things that needs to be addressed as we get older. Mobility in the home can enhance an older persons life by making it much easier to remain independent and in their own home for as long as possible.

When searching for these products you may come across the term LANTAC approved, this is the Local Authority National Type Approval Confederation who have been formed to approve designs and systems within the building trade in order to prevent too much bureaucracy preventing innovations coming to the market. They ensure that the items meet safety requirements and all local authorities are members of LANTAC.

Do shop around as the same quality products vary widely in cost depending on where you buy them. We were impressed with the price of the pack above which is advertised on 4bathrooms.co.uk at under £300 at the time of posting this.

When you fit these items they do need to be securely fixed as they will take a great deal of stress and strain during use- check out our fixings project to help you make the right choices for your walls.
