We found this brilliant blog post on Swoon Worthy which we think is a fantastic example of a mini garden makeover. They have created a lovely little area in their garden now which they can sit out and enjoy (bring on the summer!), and it has personal style which we think is inspiring.

There are lots more pictures and notes on what they did and how they did it on the blog post - check it out. If anyone has more garden makeover projects they have done or are in the process of doing, let us know and send us some pics – we’d love to see!

DIY Doctor is opening a gardening section for the green-fingered amongst you and we felt this was a great opportunity to involve you all.

If you have any gardening tricks, tips, articles, stories or pictures, please let us have them for inclusion in our new section.

The new section will open at the end of May and we are very excited about it, so lets see if we can’t make it the one stop shop for all things gardening!

Gardenphotoweb We are getting green fingers!

Incidentally, we would love to hear your DIY stories, tricks etc for our main site so if you are embarking on, or have already completed, any great projects, please let us know.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Seven water authorities in the UK have introduced hosepipe bans from today, and as we blogged about last Tuesday, they are Thames, Southern, South East, Anglian, Sutton and East Surrey, Veolia Central and Veolia South East.

The ban will affect around 20 million customers and anyone who disregards the ban could face a £1000 fine. The restrictions for those living in these areas mean that you shouldn’t water gardens, clean cars, clean boats, fill paddling pools or swimming pools, water plants, fill ponds not containing fish or fill ornamental fountains, or clean windows etc or paths and patios.

Advice for the public to save on water includes using washing machines and dishwashers only when they are full, use bath and washing up water to water plants and the garden, don’t keep the tap running when brushing your teeth and if you need to run it until the tap water goes hot or cold -  use the water to water plants and keep a jug of cold water in the fridge.

With the weather improving and more people getting out in their gardens we thought it was a great time to highlight the benefits of composting and that you can make your own DIY compost container if you don’t already have one in your garden.

A compost heap enables you to recycle garden waste and some kitchen waste AND provide you with rich compost for your garden.

Our project on building a compost bin shows how to make a simple timber container with layered sections so it allows you to remove layers as your compost rots down and makes a more efficient container. It gives step by step instructions and there is also a video showing how you can make a compost container from recycled materials.

There are lots of books available on how to make good compost and how to use it, so you can make the most of your compost heap.
