Garage doors are available in all different designs, from rollers to sectional and up and over variants. Although they may appear different on the exterior, these overhead doors all work in the same way. Moving across metal tracks on the wall, the doors operate using spring tension to provide the power needed to open and close. Therefore, if you encounter any issues with your garage door not functioning easily or properly, the solution can be simple.

Please be aware that you should not attempt to repair roll-up garage doors that have just one torsion spring. Doing so may result in injury as the tension in the spring can be very strong. If you have a door with this type of spring that needs repairing, professionals from providers such as A.B.I. garage doors Leeds should be contacted.

What you may need:

  • Screwdriver
  • Rubber mallet
  • Marking level
  • Wood filler
  • Hollow fiber plugs
  • Carpenter glue
  • Household cleaning products

When inspecting the metal tracks inside the garage, you should work with the garage door firmly closed. If these tracks have grease or dirt on them then this can easily be cleaned using household products. In order to ensure your garage doors operate smoothly you should regularly clean the roller and tracks, and wipe them dry afterwards.

If there is any damage or dents to the tracks then these can be carefully worked out using a flat piece of wood and a rubber mallet. However, if the damage is exceptional then you should contact repair professionals. You should also check the mounting brackets that fix the tracks to the interior of the garage. These can come loose over time, but can be easily fixed by tightening screws and bolts back firmly into the bracket with a screwdriver.

If the issue still continues then your problem may be where the tracks are aligned. On roll-up garage doors vertical sections of the metal track should be exactly upright and horizontal tracks should slant slightly downwards towards the back of the garage. Both tracks should be positioned at the same height on the walls. Check the track levels and, if not properly aligned, loosen the screws that hold the mounting brackets in place. Make sure not to remove them completely. You should then carefully tap the tracks back into position and recheck the tracks to make sure they are correct. You can then tighten the screws firmly into the mounting bracket.

Loose hardware can also affect the performance of your garage doors. Make sure all screws on the plates of swing-up doors are tight. If you have a roll-up door, then you should check the hinges that hold the different sections together. Any loose screws or bolts should be tightened and damaged hinges replaced.

To fix an enlarged screw hole, replace the screw with a new, longer one that is of the same diameter. You will need to use a hollow fiber plug which has been dipped in carpenter’s glue when fixing the new screw. If the surrounding wood is cracked then you should remove the hinge completely and fill the crack with wood filler, moving the hinge onto solid wood if possible. Once the filler has dried, you can replace the hinge. Servicing the hinges will usually fix the door if it is sagging on one side.

With news that the UK shale gas projects may not actually lower energy prices, it is time to start working out just what we can do to make our homes more efficient this summer in preparation for the winter of 2013.

Despite the fact that US gas prices are currently at the lowest in the world after their investment in shale gas, UK projects are currently struggling to find both funding and resources.

But what can homeowners do to make their home more comfortable while keeping their bills low?

Invest in technology

Though the idea of investing in technology may seem a little silly, the truth is that bringing new technologies into your home can help you save money in the long run.

LED lights, available from LED lighting retailers for example, though more expensive than incandescent light bulbs, offer homeowners far more life (lasting up to 10,000 hours) at a much lower price throughout. Check out LED lighting calculators to see exactly what you can save.

Other than LED lights of course, you can even save money on energy efficient televisions. A big screen television for example can really rack up an electricity bill, which can cost you anything from £4 right up to £83 per year.

If you’re planning on buying a television this summer, check out sust-it.net for a comparison of the best energy efficient televisions on the market.

See what you can recycle

Though over the past thirty years, recycling has been at the heart of everything green, there are a few new techniques to recycling that you might not be aware of.

Websites such as freecycle offer people great opportunities for giving away and receiving goods totally free of charge instead of throwing unwanted items away. Simply go on the website and find a group near you to see just what is out there.

Even outside the house and in the garden, you are able to walk into a whole field of opportunity.

These days, with a modified lawnmower, you are able to turn your grass cuttings into mulch; therein returning all the nutrients back into the soil and the remaining grass.

Grey water is also a uniquely brilliant and almost free (bearing in mind the purchase of a water drum), way of preserving water for the use of your garden. In fact, in countries such as Germany, it is actually a widely used technique to use grey water to clean things such as cars.

Check out the Green Deal

One of the greatest government schemes to have been enacted over the past year, the Green Deal is a great way of helping people afford energy efficient technologies for their homes.

Whether they need insulation for the loft, or even solar panels, people can now lend through the green deal, an amount of money to cover the costs of buying and installing these technologies.

The great thing about it is the fact that the money is paid back through the electricity bills, and if the technology won’t lower those bills, the house will not qualify for the deal; so the loan will always benefit the person investing.

To add to this, the loan stays with the home and not the person, meaning that if you were to move away, the debt stays with the house as the next people to move in shall also benefit from the improvements that you have made.

Light switches How to Replace a Light Switch

Replacing a light switch may seem like a simple job, but it requires some basic electrical knowledge, and may end up becoming quite confusing if you don’t know what to do.

Always make sure that you read the instruction manual that comes with your new switch plate cover before you begin work, and if you don’t feel confident get a qualified electrician to do it instead.

Step One: Turn Off The Power Supply
Turn off the power at the fuse box before you do anything. If you switch the light on in the room that you’re working in then you can check that you’ve flipped the right switch.

Step Two: Remove the Light Switch Plate Cover
Using an insulated screwdriver, unscrew the screws from the front of the plate. Then pull it carefully towards you to reveal the connecting wires.

Step Three: Check the Switch Isn’t Live
Using a proprietary test lamp, or a two-pole voltage detector; test whether the wires are live. If they are, do not continue as it is not safe. Check that the power is off as in Step One. Providing they are not live, then you can proceed as normal.

Step Four: Note the Connecting Sequence
The number of wires may vary depending on the type of switch you have. Make a note of which wire connects to which terminal in case you forget or the instructions are confusing. Taking a picture with a mobile device may help.

Step Five: Disconnect The Switch Cover
Using your insulated screwdriver, disconnect the wires from the switch plate.

Step Six: Replacing Your Switch
Your new switch will have instructions on how to wire it correctly, so following these would be the best course of action. It should be wired in the same way as the previous switch cover, whether it was a one way switch, a two way switch or an intermediate switch. You should however, always make sure that the bare earth wire is covered by a green and yellow insulating sleeve. If there is no earth wire then do not use a metal plate cover. Live wires are ‘line conductors’ and need to be insulated with a brown cover.

If you’re interested in new light switches or plug plate covers, then you can buy Light Switches Online at Harbro in a variety of attractive styles that will add the finishing touches to your newly decorated room.

Modern Bathroom Modernising Your Bathroom

The bathroom is a place in which many of us spend quite a lot of time. From getting ready for work in the morning, to washing away the cares of the day before bedtime, it plays an important role in our daily routine. Yet some of us are still living with outdated, ugly looking bathrooms. We may not even realise the effect that waking up to an ugly bathroom is having on our overall mood. But never fear – there are lots of different ways to update and improve the look of your bathroom, giving it a fresh, modern look which you’ll be able to enjoy, every day.

Step One: Deep Clean
We all clean our bathrooms, but how many of us get to those really stubborn spots? Places like behind the toilet and underneath the rim of the sink are prime places for dirt to collect. Before modernising your bathroom, make sure you get into all of those hard-to-reach places with a good, bleach-based bathroom cleaner.

Step Two: Wash the Windows
Windows let light into our home, and dirty windows will prevent this from happening. To modernise and freshen up your bathroom, you should make good use of natural light by allowing as much to come in as possible.

Step Three: Replace Old Flooring
Like it or not, bathroom floors are a prime place for germs to collect, and, unless your bathroom floor is perfectly tiled and easy to keep clean, you may wish to consider replacing your bathroom floor every few years. Laminate flooring is an inexpensive option and incredibly easy to lay. Not only that, but it will give your bathroom an ultra modern look.

Step Four: It’s All About Accessories
Modern bathroom design is all about accessorising. Bathrooms often end up being strewn with towels, soaps, toothbrushes etc., and if you can manage to co-ordinate these items your bathroom will look ten times better. Match your towels to your bath mat and, if you have one, shower curtain.

Step Five: Lighting
Lighting can make all the difference to your bathroom, so make sure your bathroom is lit as well as possible by installing a mixture of spotlights, downlights and even illuminated mirrors & bathroom cabinets. Not only should your bathroom lighting make your bathroom look great, but it should also make you look great. For extra points, install a dimmer switch so you can create a romantic atmosphere for those cosy evenings in.

Step Six: Storage Solutions
As mentioned above, bathrooms have a habit of getting messy. And if there’s more than two people in the house, this mess can sometimes get out of control. This is where great bathroom storage comes in. Modern bathrooms tend to integrate storage into the overall design layout, sinking sinks into cupboards and hiding cabinets behind sleek, sliding mirrors.

Step Seven: Keep it Simple
This is less of a step, and more of an injunction. If you want to make your bathroom look as modern as possible, it’s best to keep your design simple. Decals on tiles are dated, as are floral wallpapers, and too many colours will make your bathroom look agitated and over-busy. If you want to incorporate colour into your bathroom, do so in a way which won’t dominate the room. Soft colours can be used throughout, as long as they are complimentary, but bold colours should only be used as accents or features. And anything which can be put away, should be. Linens, towels, bottles, lotions, medicines – all of these things will make your bathroom look cluttered if left lying around. So make sure your bathroom storage is adequate, and make sure you have a good clean out on a regular basis.

Building a deck How to Build a Deck for Entertaining

With summer just around the corner, many of you may already have begun your garden renovation projects. In fact, the intermittent good weather has meant that the past few weeks have been a great time to perform some basic tasks, such as weeding, mowing the lawn and replenishing your flower beds.

But gardens aren’t just there to look pretty; they’re also there to be put to good use. Well kept gardens are a great place to spend time in, whether you’re playing outside, relaxing in the sun or hosting a fun get-together for friends and family.

Perfecting Your Outdoor Space
Ideally, your garden will be able to perform many functions. This is why planning is essential when designing the look of your garden, in order to fully maximise the available space and light.

If you’ve got entertaining in mind, you may wish to consider allocating a section of your garden specifically for that purpose. Some people lay flagging, others use pebbles. But if you really want to impress, a well built deck will be a great addition to your garden.

How to Build a Deck
Building a deck is easier than it sounds. Begin by measuring your space and draw a plan of the area, to account for any obstacles. You can use this plan to calculate the area of your deck, so you will know exactly how much decking you will need to buy. At this stage, you should make sure you are wearing the right protective gear, e.g. gloves.

  • Your ground can be prepared by clearing all vegetation and laying a deck fabric. The framework for your deck should be laid onto concrete slabs, so use a level to make sure they’re level.
  • Build your framework from the outside in, fixing the joists together with rustproof screws. If your deck is against your house, you may wish to secure it to an outside wall. Long joists fill the outer framework, spaced at regular intervals, and short boards can be used to strengthen the frame.
  • Lay your decking boards at a right angle to your house. Doing so will make your garden seem longer. Use stainless steel screws to prevent rust and staining, and fix the ends of your boards first.
  • Voila! You are now ready to entertain guests on your beautiful, hand-built wooden deck. Install some rattan outdoor furniture for your guests’ comfort, and don’t forget the Pimms!
