We have a new project to help you if you are looking at re-decorating a room and are looking for advice. If you are wanting a new look, a simple way of doing this is by creating what is known as a ‘feature wall’

A feature wall gives you the opportunity of doing something a bit different, whether it be bold, bright or patterned, but without decorating the whole room in the same colour/pattern. It might be that you choose paint or wallpaper to create your feature wall, but the most important thing is to decide which wall you are going to pick!

The most sucessfull tend to be the wall or recess behind the bed in a bedroom or the fireplace wall or recesses either side in a living room. But you will decide on what will work in your home – it may be you want a feature wall in the bathroom or kitchen, and it still gives you the opportunity to try something different.

You may choose a tone lighter or darker than the rest of the walls in the room, or you may choose a contrasting colour or a bold wallpaper. Take a look at our project on colour theory and the colour wheel to understand more about choosing colours for your home. If you are doing any wallpapering – take a look at our project on how to hang wallpaper.

colour wheel New projects on the websiteFirstly we have the first of many new projects planned on interior design, and this one is focusing on colour theory and how to choose and use colour in your home. It gives helpful advice on using a colour wheel and what different colours can do for an interior.

Then we have a couple of projects, also dealing with interiors but the first one is all about artex and how to apply artex or textured plaster to walls or ceilings, and the second project is on decorative mouldings such as skirting, cornices and ceiling roses.

Swedish furniture company Ikea have built an apartment in the Auber metro station in Paris, entirely kitted out with Ikea furniture, and for the last 5 days there have been 5 people living in it. Watch the building of the apartment…..

The idea is to show how comfortably you can live in a small space, and passers-by can watch the goings-on in the apartment as there are lots of viewing windows. The residents have even managed to have a party while they have been living there. The five parisians move out on Saturday having lived in the 581 square foot space for 6 days.

If you have started the new year feeling a bit bored with your surroundings at home, now might be a good time to look at a bit or redecorating.

Many people find having taken dowm the christmas tree and decorations they take a fresh look at their interiors. It may be that just re-arranging the furniture in the living room or bedroom could freshen it up for you. But you might feel that an up-date is overdue and this is a good time of year to take on a relatively minor project you can happily do indoors!

brush set Fancy a change of scenery? If you haven’t the time or are a bit worried about doing anything too dramatic, you could try just painting or wallpapering an accent wall, and then just buying a few accessories to compliment the change. Or if you are planning a more major overhaul of a room, it is a good idea to get all your ideas, colour swatches etc together so you can make a really good plan of what you want the room to look like and the order that things need to be done in to create the transformation.

We have lots of project pages with advice to help you, from how to mask-up when decorating and advice on different types of paint brushes and rollers, to painting new plaster and hanging wallpaper.

We are loving these Star Trek inspired air-powered doors at DIY Doctor which we found via dornob.com.

They have been fitted by a DIY geek in America, and even have the whooshing air sound as they are powered by compressed air.
