4 gang 2 way switch

Postby spudnikmir1 » Wed Jul 11, 2007 12:31 pm

Hi i am currently re wiring my house. I have a 4 gang 2 way switch that i want to connect three wall lights in the lounge, 2 wall lights in the dinning room and 2 pendent ceiling lights in these 2 rooms repectivly. The dinning room light will be controlled from two locations and the use of 4 core wire will need to be utilised. I wondered what the simplest way of wiring up to the switch. By the way i am in consultation with my local sparky, i do all the hard graft and he comes makes sure i ve routed chased in the wiring correctly and connects up and i get my cert! Your advice would be much apprieated as my my sparky is away on hols for 2 weeks and i need to get this part of the wiring finished.

CAN U CLARIFY THE FOLLOWING.
WHERE DO U INTEND TO SITE 4 GANG SWITCH. ? LOUNGE ?
WHEN U SAY THE DINING ROOM LIGHT WILL BE CONTROLLED FROM TWO
LOCATIONS WHERE R THESE LOCATIONS ?
WOULD ONE OF THESE LOCATIONS BE THE 4 GANG ?
THE 2ND LOCATION DINING ROOM .
LET ME KNOW

HI BLAKEY, YES YOU ARE CORRECT IN ASSUMING THE 4 GANG LIGHT SWITCH LOCATION WOULD BE IN THE LOUNGE AND THE AND THAT THE DINNING ROOM LIGHT WOULD BE CONTROLLED FROM THE 4 GANG IN THE LOUNGE AND FROM A 2 GANG 2 WAY SWITCH AT THE OTHER END OF THE DINNING ROOM.

SPUDNIKMIR
FIRST OF ALL I AM PLEASED THAT YOU HAVE ENGAGED
THE SERVICES OF YOUR LOCAL PART P SPARKY.
SORRY I HAVE NOT GOT BACK TO U SOONER.
I ASSUME YOU REQUIRE THE FOLLOWING SWITCHING ARRANGEMENTS.

FROM LEFT TO RIGHT ON 4 GANG SWITCH IN LOUNGE

SWITCH 1 TO SWITCH LOUNGE CEILING LIGHT
SWITCH 2 TO SWITCH THE THREE WALL LIGHTS IN THE LOUNGE.
SWITCH 3 TO SWITCH DINING ROOM LIGHT ON A TWO WAY WITH
SWITCH 1 OF THE 2 GANG TWO WAY IN DINING ROOM
SWITCH 4 TO SWITCH ON THE TWO WALLLIGHTS ON A TWO WAY WITH
SWITCH 2 OF THE TWO GANG SWITCH IN DINING ROOM.

IF THE ABOVE IS WHAT I ASSUME U WANT , U WOULD WIRE AS FOLLOWS.
FROM THE MAINS BOARD I ASSUME THE DOWNSTAIRS LIGHTING
CIRCUIT HAS BEEN STARTED BY RUNNING A 1.5 MM2 CABLE ( BROWN AND BLUE ) AND LOOPED IN AND OUT OF EACH CEILING LIGHTING POINT REQUIRED, IE HALL , LOUNGE, DINING ROOM , KITCHEN ECT.
FOR LOUNGE LIGHT SWITCH NO 1 ON 4 GANG RUN A TWIN BROWN 1.0MM2 CABLE TO LOUNGE CEILING LIGHT . MARK THIS AT 4 GANG
LOUNGE CEILING LIGHT .
FOR LOUNGE WALL LIGHTS, FROM SWITCH NO 2 ON 4 GANG RUN A 1.5MM2 ( BROWN AND BLUE ) TO LOUNGE CEILING LIGHT. MARK THIS
FEED IN LOUNGE WALLLIGHTS AT 4 GANG. NEXT RUN A 1.5 MM2 ( BLUE
AND BROWN ) OUT OF FOUR GANG AND LOOP IN OUT OF EACH WALL
LIGHT ENDING UP WITH ONE BROWN AND BLUE CABLE AT 3RD LOUNGE
WALL LIGHT. LABEL THIS FEED OUT AT 4 GANG AND TAPE UP WITH CABLE MARKED FEED IN .
FOR DINING ROOM CEILING LIGHT FROM SWITCH NO3 ON FOUR GANG
RUN A 3 CORE AND EARTH 1.0MM2 CABLE TO THE FIRST SWITCH OF TWO GANG IN DINING ROOM. AT 4 GANG END AND TWO GANG END LABEL TWO WAY DINING ROOM CEILING LIGHT.
FOR DINING ROOM WALL LIGHTS FROM SWITCH NO 4 AT 4 GANG RUN A
A 3 CORE AND EARTH 1.0MM2 CABLE TO THE SECOND SWITCH OF TWO
GANG IN DINING ROOM AND LABEL AT BOTH ENDS TWO WAY DINING ROOM WALL LIGHTS.
FINALLY FROM TWO GANG IN DINING ROOM U NEED TO RUN A TWIN BROWN TO DINING ROOM CEILING LIGHT. AT TWO GANG END TAPE THIS WITH CABLE 3 CORE MARKED TWO WAY DINING ROOM CEILING
LIGHT.
FOR THE OTHER REMAINING 3 CORE MARKED DINING ROOM WALL LIGHTS AT TWO GANG , RUN FROM 2 GANG IN DINING ROOM A 1.5 MM2
BROWN AND BLUE CABLE TO DINING ROOM CEILING LIGHT. MARK THIS
FEED IN DINING ROOM WALL LIGHTS . THEN TO FINISH RUN A 1.5 MM2
CABLE BROWN AND BLUE AND LOOP TO 1ST THEN 2ND DINING ROOM WALL LIGHT. MARK THIS AT 2 GANG END FEED OUT. TAPE THESE TWO
BROWN AND BLUE TO 3 CORE MARKED DINING ROOM WALL LIGHTS.
