50 foot close fence to put up

    Postby peggit » Wed Jul 16, 2008 4:57 pm

i am preparing to put up a closed fence up 25ft then another 25ft at theside as a join on.plus making a gate in at a 15ft in one area which = 15ft plus gate =3-4ft =6ft fence left on that side any ideas on planning, total cost of timber = roughly £222, will i be better using 4in or 6in boards 3-3 or 4-4 posts.

in terms of planning a few things to consider (not sure if you've done this before so apologies if you know this already!!)

Mark out your start and end points and work in between those. Use a string or marking line to ensure you're working in a straight line. Depending on the length of fence rail you plan to use (usually 3.6m) make sure you mark your holes out at the appropriate points so that your posts are every 1.8m.

For a 6ft fence you should be looking to sink your posts 18in to 2ft. Presume your concreting them in - if so i'd suggest using something like postcrete or postfix which is 1 bag per hole and very easy to use.

Boards - using 6in boards will porbably cost a little less. they'll cost a little more but as you'll be using less of them over the length of the fence you should end up saving. think it's really down to preference - persoanlly i prefer 4 in boards as they look a little less "industrial"!

Posts - bigger the post the more sturdy it'll be. Just to confuse matters i usually use 4x3 posts (!)

Hope some fo this has helped (!!)
