Backboiler removed - Sealing up fireplace?

Postby dbridle » Sat Mar 02, 2013 9:43 pm

Hello all,

First time posting! Have used the site before and found it very useful!

We have removed a backboiler and its left a nasty gap in the fireplace. We considered converting it to a solid fuel fireplace, but in the end decided to brick, plaster and paint over it.

We were happy to do this until someone said we may need an air block right smack in the middle of the fireplace for building regulations. Is this the case? Part of me thinks because there was a back boiler in there before this will not be neccessary. Also were advised we would need to sweep the chimney, but again, since a backboiler was there, there should not be any soot.

We are hoping to brick it up next Sunday, so would appreciate some feedback on this if you can!

Thanks a ton in advance,

Darren

yes you need to vent it, you will need a hit and miss plastic sliding vent this is to allow air to circulate so moisture does not occur in the flue causing damp

so long as the area is clear so the air can circulate then you can put it wherever

yes, but you will have to knock a hole through to the flue and line it with a clay sleeve, its easier to fit it in the front
