Box bedrooms

I have a box bedroom in my house and as I'm sure you are aware it contains a box over the stair case ! Is there a way of reducing it's size or modifying it slightly to allow a bit more room ??

Limited I am affraid as the choice is a box or a sloping area to maintain the headroom of the stair below. Thats why people often have a cupboard!
