Bulding Regulations - Steep Stairs in Victorian Terrace

Hi

We have a small Victorian terrace, two up two down type with two central single layer brick walls housing our staircase.

We want to turn the stairs around so they go up to the hallway instead of both the bedrooms.

The problem is that in renewing the stairs we will have to comply with building regulations to do this, and our stairs do not comply at present.

Does anyone know anyway around this problem? We dont really want half the staircase coming into either of the rooms downstairs but we will have a quarter circle at the bottom to gain some height, unfortuately not enough though.

I have thought about using the materials from the old stair case and getting planning permission to do this, not sure if it will make any difference though?

I take it the staircase is presently at right angles to the hallway?

Best advice I can give you is find a local joiner who makes staircases and get him round to have a look. If its possible he will know. You will have to satisfy building regs if you move the stairs and you will struggle to make them yourself especially if you need to use kites to get up.

We have had a joiner round who gaveus some solutions but was seeing if anyone else had any ideas.
