Can I paint a marble fire surround/hearth?

I need some advice, is it possible to paint over a light coloured marble fire surround and hearth? I was thinking that I might be able to get some matt black paint to make it look like slate? something like blackboard paint? I have no idea and so any advice would be appreciated Thanks
