Ceiling light problems

by coopergtr » Wed Jul 23, 2008 10:21 am

I am having trouble fitting a ceiling light. i can either get the light to come on bright and not turn off or have the light come on dim and be turned off at the switch. Below are a couple of pictures of what i am working with.

The sleeve with the 4 wires coming out is what is heading to the wall switch. And the one with 3 is what i think is coming from the previous light.

Here is the connector i am working with, please can someone tell me which wires need to go where??
Many thanks!

Sorry to say your configuration is not standard. One does not normally get 3 core and earth at the light.
Looking at picture two normally you would have two or three red wires in centre depending if end of line or not and with blues one or two blacks and with brown a black with red sleeve.
If the three core and earth goes to switch I wonder why a third core? Did it have an emergency lamp fitted? Is one core not used? Is it feeding neutral to switch to work another lamp?
As an Electrician, I would have to remove switch and ring out what cables do. There is really no short cut.
Sorry I know not want you want to hear.
