Creaking Stairs

by beadie » Tue Apr 13, 2010 10:15 am

We have 3/4 steps on the stairs that creak really bad. Having had a quick look it seems the risers have come loose from the treads. I cannot get access from underneath. House is only 4 years old I moved in 6 months ago. Is this something that should be covered under NHBC?. If not what is the best way to fix the issue as I have no access underneath. Thanks

beadie,
With that age of house the riser material is probably a thin sheet of ply or MDF. Best tackled from underneath you're have to find a way in.
end

a common problem unfortunately on newbuilds - as stoneyboy says, cheap materials have been used.

fixed exact same problem in a friend's house using steel L brackets underneath to restrict movement.

really the only way to fix it is from underneath. you could try NHBC, not sure if it's covered but worth a go.
