Damaged oak dining room table

I tried to get rid of a stain on my oak dining room table by rubbing with a damp sponge. Unfortunately, it seemed to have taken off the top layer of the wood/varnish and left me with a pale area/stain of wood.
Should I treat it with wood dye or use special pencils to cover it up?
