Earth Wire When Replacing Metal Ceiling Light Fitting with Plastic one

by Chunnsmith » Wed Aug 05, 2015 1:09 pm

Hi,
I've searched as many boards as possible but can't find a definitive answer.
I have removed a metal light fitting from my stairway ceiling. It has twin cables from the ceiling (blue and brown). The old metal light fitting had an earth cable from the little cable terminal (ie where the blue and brown went in to) attached to the metal of the fitting itself.
There is no earth cable coming from the ceiling (it's an old house and we can't afford to rewire it all).
The new fitting is just a plastic pendant. I can see where the live and neutral cables go in, and there is the little 'socket' on it for an earth cable. The light has two switches (at top and bottom of stairs).
So, the question is: do I go ahead with just live and neutral cables OR do I cut the earth wire off the old fitting and attach it to the main terminal and the little earth 'socket'? That would emulate what was on the old fitting but surely just having earth cable within the fitting makes no sense??

Many thanks to anyone who can fill me in!
