expanding foam filler

I want to use this for the first time. I need to fill a large gap(2 " wide and I don't know how deep) left at the window edge of a wooden windowsill after a PVC sill has been removed. Do I need to know anything about it or how to use it? Also. what's the best way to make it good and get a reasonable surface for painting afterwards? Thanks
