external render ratio/materials

i am looking to render a small external wall. can anyone provide the correct ratio mix and sand type, will normal builders sand do? will i need any additives?

1 cement to 6 sand is normal but it does depend on the wall material. Use Sharp sand. Builders sand won't work and if you use that it will all fall off in due course. PVA the wall first and slap the render before it completely dries out.
