finishing pine table

Hi- my husband is a blacksmith and made me a beautiful new dining room table- steel base with a light pine top. I need to finish the top. I would like it to look somewhat rustic, and want a finish that is not too fussy. It should be durable enough to not show a ring every time the kids set a glass down, but I am not concerned about scratches, etc. over time. What would you recommend?
