fitting heavy wood gates to brick pillar?

by 2yellows » Tue Mar 15, 2011 8:26 pm

Hello all,

I would like to fit wooden driveway gates to a widened driveway.

The old brick pillars will be taken down but need to know how to strengthen as one of the gates is approx 10' long, a field type wooden gate that weighs probably too much. The original pillar is approx 12-14"
square.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Best to put in 2 vertical RSJ's or box beams in good foundations & build around them in brick. Don't forget to get 2 plates or L-Brackets welded on the metal beams to hold the hinges.
