Fixing a Banister that has Come Away from Wall Support

I'm a complete novice and need advice on how to fix our broken banister. It was like this when we moved in. It's come away from the support on the wall. How do I go about fixing this?

Skew screw it back from the underside of the handrail back to the half newel post. Can counterbore the hole then fill it in with 2 pack wood filler

Gh1987 has got it spot on.

If you want to get more information about how the handrails, banisters and newels all fit together there is a great project here:

This should give you a little more understanding about how they all fit together, so you'll be able to see how you can fix them!
