Getting a builder to visit and quote?

Hi there,

Finding a workman on this website seems to be about getting someone to quote for a specific job. I need to get 3 quotes for building work on my mother's house, but I need the builder to tell me what needs to be done! Is this like taking a car to a garage and saying, "Do whatever is necessary"? I have a rough idea, but need to go round with the builders on site and get some input from them.

How do I go about this?
