Gunk behind washing machine seal.

Hi all.
I have a Hotpoint WD860 washer/dryer. The problem I have is a load of gunk behind the door seal, between the seal and the drum. When the wash cycle finnishes the washing is covered in splatters of this gunk. I have done two hot cotton washes to see if this would clean the machine, but still have gunk behind the seal.

Does anyone know where this gunk came from? How can I prevent it occurring again? Is there a way of cleaning this stuff out?
