halogen lights in bedroom only 1 out of 4 working

i have four halogen lights that have been put into the ceiling by previous house holder. the problem is that only one works. another one comes on intermittently. have a had a look and although there is wires going all over the place in the attic. all wires seem secure. any idea where to start. have tried the normal ..swapping bulbs etc
