Help locating blocked fire place

Post by John7 » Tue Sep 02, 2008 8:00 pm

As part of decorating a room I need to add ventilation to a blocked off fire place. The problem is its not at all clear where this was, there is a wall across one end of the room with an alcove on the right hand side only. The room underneath has a chimneybreast with an alcove on either side. The chimneys for the two “fires” are the ground floor one on the left and first floor on the right. Any ideas as to how to locate the location of the first floor opening would be gratefully received!

This can be tricky, you obviously want to minimise damage, but your efforts to find the flue and vent it will be better in the long run as disused stacks should always be vented.

Firstly, if it is an open fireplace, have a good look up it from downstairs so see if you can see where the step occurs.

Alternatively you can hire a Borescope, drill 10mm diameter holes in the breat upstairs and ascertain the flue position that way.

Have fun and good luck.
