I think to be able to think on his/her feet,problem solving is a must,be able to work unsupervised.
pride in the job is a must, and love what they do

DoctorD,
I think it depends on what work you want done.
If you want a cut roof formed it will be pointless using a carpenter who specialises in making doors/windows.
Ask to see previous work of the type you want carried out and check the prospective tradesman actually did the work.
