i need to block off my attic from next door- help!!

Postby wilsonathome » Sat Jun 23, 2007 1:39 pm

you can get into my next door neighbours attic via my attic. i have ordered some thermalite blocks to make a start as soon as possible, my problem is: do i need some sort of a base to start building on? i know this may seem a dull question but my boyfriend has just left me and i'm just learning diy, also i thought i may as well board the attic room out, what thickness boards do i need to buy to be able to walk around up there?

Simply Build It

Steady on there.

Chip-board flooring is a product and is therefore already of the correct thickness. BUT - your ceiling joists MUST be sufficiently sturdy to take the weight of the new floor and the items /people it has to support.

Hate to say this but you need some good honest advice. Local builders will be a bit dodgy as you are apparently YFS female and are unfortunately seen as an easy touch for big money but minimal effort solutions to things you can do yourself.

If your joists are too light for a floor you can glue and screw additional joists onto the existing ones to beef the up but I would suggest you might need to get some proffesional advice on this one - or buy a good book.

Sorry it's not a more definate answer.
