Leaky shower wall - tile over tiles?

    Postby jrowe5 » Thu Aug 26, 2010 1:55 pm

    Hello

I have a leaky shower that was installed 3 years ago. Have had the sealant replaced but the problem appears to be the tiles or tile grout, which seem to be fixed directly onto plasterboard without aquapanel or equivalent behind them.

The builder I am working with suggests puting a second layer of the same tiles over the first, as removing existing tiles will likely damage the underlying plasterbaord and be quite messy and time consuming.

Is this likely to be sufficient? Could any problems arise?

A builder's merchant I spoke to suggested using "wbp plywood" (as cheaper than aquapanel) in between first and second layers of tiles to provide extra protection - can this be reliably fixed onto existing tiles? Will it be suitable and provide adequate protection against moisture?

Sorry if these questions are dumb, I have never tried any DIY myself.

    Many thanks.

    John

    Why not use Shower Boards?
There are some nice designs out now and they're great for sticking over tiles!!

The existing tiles are used elsewhere in the bathroom and I would like the shower to keep a consistent look with the rest of the room if possible.
