This is the room, I also explain where I'm thinking of putting lights.
I want to be able to see a bit while they are on. Also, I am not sure whether I should stick with el wire/led tape/christmas lights due to visibility reasons.

P.S. Extra points for color switching :P

You could run a strip around the top but you don't have a lot to hide it behind? You could put strip behind a wooden board and it would look quite nice? I put some strip behind gallery wall and it looked good. recommend this for sure http://www.bltdirect.com/single-colour-flexible-high-power-led-strip-light-white-24v-dc

Alternatively you could have some spots scattered around the ceiling? It would give a lot more light than strips? Again Id reccomend these as they are complete units! http://www.bltdirect.com/enlite-8w-warm-white-dimmable-led-fire-rated-ip65-downlight-bezel
