Loft Downlights - MR16 or GU10

by Nav » Sun Jul 25, 2010 6:49 pm

Hi All.
Please advise if I should go for Low Voltage (transformer type) or Mains powered downlights in my new Loft conversion? I know they must be fire rated as there is not much room above the fittings. As far as i can see, the GU10 (mains) have a wide variety of bulbs to choose from including LED's and are probably cheaper.
On the other hand the MR16's (Low Voltage) all need a transformer and must have aluminium reflector type bulbs and the overall running costs (including the replacement of non working transformers) seem to cost more.

Please can someone shed some light (no pun intended) on this subject.

Thanks.

Nav,
Go for the GU10s fitted with led lamps, cheaper overall and not as hot.
