loft flooring

I am about to purchase a 10 YEAR OLD HOME, CAN i JUST PUT A FEW FLOOR BOARDS DOWN TO STORE SOME STUFF, LIKE XMAS STUFF AND SPARE STUFF? I have heard that the joists re to thin to do this?

You should be fine but put heavy items like boxes of books in areas where there are walls below.
