new light fitting

hi guys sorry if this as been covered over n over again but im fitting new spotlight in bedroom .old light fitting standard ceiling rose .new light fitting metal spotlights i av no problems wiring it just wondering with the new light bein metal do i av to add a flying earth to the face plate also im sure i read somewhere that on metal sockets and light switches you dont need to add flying earths as long as there is a metal fixing screw attached cud someone please confirm if this is true thanx alot bazza

Quite simply the most important thing to ensure is that the green and yellow wire from your lighting circuit ( earth / cpc as we call it ) , is connected to the metal work of your fitting. this could well be done by a pigtail earth from the main terminal block of the fitting to the metal.
class 1 fittings , items with metal frames must be earthed . a live conductor touching the fitting would then operate safely the protective device .
