    New meter and box?

    Postby billy96 » Wed Feb 27, 2008 11:03 pm

    Hi all.
The door to my gas meter box has been missing for about a year and the meter and box are really starting to look crap (meter is corroding)
The gas company still come and read it ok.
I want to rent the property out, so as the meter is right next to the front door it looks terrible.
Whats the best way to see about getting a new meter and box installed without forking out a forune?

    there isn't :(
only a meter qualified person can install a meter, and as far as the box goes, is it sunk into the wall? If so, only the door can be changed at cheep. Otherwise it brick work as well

I presume the gas company is responsible for the meter?
If i told them it was damaged would they replace it?

Worth a try - the gas board are responsible for the meter. If the meter is not protected it is open to weathering and also vandalism.

Fitting a new meter box or just a replacment door would also be in their interests. I'm pretty sure they do replace them.

    Hello,

Call the gas emergency service 0800 111 999 and tell them that you are reporting a "concern for safety" as its already corroded. They may try to pass the problem over to your gas supplier (BG, Eon, Scottish power etc..) either way tell them the meter has corroded and you thing its been interfeared with by kids, they will call out with 4 hours to check it out.
