new plastered ceiling

by whitehart » Thu Oct 22, 2009 12:57 pm

hi all can anyone help,

I have recently had my kitchen ceiling plastered, they used boards and two coats of plaster, although a week on and completely dry there are definite lines along the ceiling.

i have had the guy come back out and he says its only water lines, is he correct or could there be another problem??

When you say lines do you mean lines in the shape of the plasterboards or lines everywhere?

If its just lines were the joines in the plasterboard are this is not uncommon as due to depth this tends to dry slower but should disapear.

i wasnt sure where the boards were put, its like a ridge, if i scrape it it becomes flat, is it just a case he didnt smooth it over properly.

its strange that is the length of the ceiling, if the boards werent level would that affect the plaster or cause problems in future like cracking?

As long as he's used fibre tape on the joins then it should be fine, there shouldnt be any lines anywhere but occasionally you will see slight lines where the boards meet, especially if he's overboarded the ceiling, if these lines are everywhere then hes not done the job 100%, if he'd just skimmed over the original ceiling then thats a different story but he's skimmed over a plasterboarded one and the finish should be near perfect.
