New wardrobe damp proofing

by Darkmatter » Mon Aug 31, 2009 5:41 pm

Hi there this is quite a subject I know but not without its complications,

We (girlfriend n I) bought a flat last may since that time over winter we found we have a mould/damp/condensation problem we are aware we can "solve" this by ventilation. But living on a ground floor flat its not easy to leave the windows open in winter to allow ventilation without the risk of being robbed or making the flat a freezer! We also have old PVC windows so have no Vents at top so adds up to a annoying situation.

Anyway we had a nice big chipboard "pine" finnish wardrobe which of course with damp grew its own mould factory and warped to the point of rotting, we have finally saved enough for a new one we cant afford solid oak so were gonna get a new chipboard one but were thinking if we varnish the wardrobe with something like boat varnish or ronseal etc and pulling out half a foot from the wall allowing air to flow around the back will this prevent this new wardrobe falling apart and warping again?

Sorry aboutt the long winded story but as you can see were sorta stuck in a rut in how to approach this with out spending thousands ( as a first time buyer we dont have)

DM
