No earth to connect to

by wellybob » Sun Nov 16, 2008 11:16 pm

I,ve just bought a new ceiling light which has to be connected by means of a wiring block - no problem! However, the light has an earth wire and there is no earth wire in the ceiling rose. What do I do with the earth wire?

If you read the best practice guide by the Electrical Safety Council http://www.esc.org.uk/business-and-comm ... uides.html you will see answer is leave the light fitting in the box and fit one which is double insulated instead.
Since the regulations require that the earth wire must follow same route as line and it needs to be at least 4mm to pull in a new earth is as much work as rewiring the lighting circuit so not a job to be considered lightly.
You will also note reading Best Practice Guide No.1 that labels should also be fixed to the consumer unit.
