No spin!

We put a wash load on yesterday in our haier hwd-c1200txve-f washing machine, but when it comes to spin it will only spin VERY slowly, and it doesn't kick into the usual fast spin that really makes a difference. When it tries to spin there is a slight crackling sound in the machine, like little bits clanking together...any advice on the problem most welcome. Thanks.
