old house....

by Bradley02 » Tue Jul 08, 2008 5:07 pm

Hi all, new to the forum so please bere with me.

I have just bought an old house and have started looking at the electrics. One of the sockets always trips of the switch on the fuse box but its the lighting that goes. If I understand it right this socket must be a spur off the lighting ring but i can see that as being safe.

Can anyone give me some guidance please?

Hi Bradley02 anything which is likely to plunge you into darkness can’t be regarded as safe. Because any overload will cause the MCB to open electrically it is not a danger but it does not comply with regulations and should have been picked up with the periodic inspection report which should be completed when a house changes occupants or every ten years which ever happens first. I am not sure on legal position all this buyers pack thing is new to me but I think you should ask your solicitors about this. Although the regulations do require the inspection and test to be done nothing says who should do them.
All best Eric
