Painting fence panels

Need to paint picket fencing black - trouble is the timber is rough sawn so cannot be coated effectively in gloss paint.

Cannot cosider sanding as it's just not practical and chunks missing in the wood in places.

Suggestions please.

Use a small roller and sadolin classic in ebony, for a glossier finish add a coat of sadolin extra.
end
