Painting oak oil

by Sheal » Fri Dec 10, 2010 5:16 pm

Hi,
I've recently had a wooden plaque made in oak with my house number on it. It has been finished with oak oil. I'd like to paint on it but I'm not sure if I can or what type of paint to use. Any ideas please.

oak, as with many types of hardwood, does not take a paint too well at the best of times due to the natural resins present. if it's been oiled as well i'd really not bother trying to paint it unless you can remove all the oil. this means sanding and depending on how much the oil has absorbed into the wood will determine how much sanding will be required.
