Can anyone help me.......I am trying to paint coving with white matt emulsion which is not covering dark patches left by some plastering work that was done, is there a better paint to use or should I try sanding it, any tips greatly appreciated.

Use zinsser B-I-N it is a shellac based sealer,readily available from B&Q ,trade paint outlets etc.
