plug in bahroom sink won't stay down

When I lift the plunger thing behind the tap the plug goes down but it doesn't hold it down so can't fill the basin. How do I fix it please?

Get behind the sink where the waste comes out - there will be rod going into the waste fitting held in place with a knurled nut. Tighten this nut until the rod actuator is stiff.
