How do I cap off an old washing machine connection at the ground level so the sewer smell does not come into home?

Depends on if you need to use it again. But assuming you don't, get a straight connector with a rodding eys, if you need to use it again you can just remove the rodding eye. Quick solution is to put a rubber glove over the end.
