Power flush needed / DIY

Firstly: I need to know if I really need a power flush? I've heard that I can have a water sample tested for free, not sure where.
Secondly: I am considering DIYing it. Is there any online "how to manuals" on power flushing, that I can trust?

Need more info, what symptoms make you think you need a powerflush ? - sometimes they're seen as quick/easy money and not always necessary.
