Reinforcing Floor Joists For Loft Conversion

Post by D-Mac » Mon Jul 04, 2011 9:49 am

Hello all,

I'm wanting to convert the loft space within a garage and the existing ceiling joists are 220x47mm at 400mm centres. The span across the garage is 5.4m making the floor joists about one metre too long according to the standard span tables.

Can anybody tell me what the normal method of improvement is to reinforce these joists so that the Building Control Officer will accept them. Ceiling heights both above and below the joists are at their limits so I would rather not have to increase the depth of the joists if possible.

Thanks.

Dylan.
