i live in a mid terrace house and i am renovating and propose to re move the internal chimney breast in the two rooms below the loft. I do not intend to remove the chimney from the loft or roof. I will support the remaining chimney on the loft rafters. Would that be sufficient to support the load.

NO NO NO NO NO......PLease contact the building control department of your local Council. You are about to embark on a structural alteration which by law requires building regulation approval. Your loft rafters are only sized to hold up the ceiling below and perhaps and empty suitcase or two. Not a 2 tonne chimney stack. This is not a DIY Job. There are special brackets and methods for supporting stacks. If it is not done properly your house insurance will not be vaklid and someone at some point is very likely to get killed.
