Removing lacquer and varnish from a stainless steel tap?

Our kitchen sink mixer tap seems to have original had a coating/lacquer that is now worn in places. It also has some varnish on the bottom of it from when someone did the work surface...

I was thinking of removing the tap and somehow cleaning it up and removing the lacquer.

Any suggestions on removing the lacquer and varnish?
And would there be any issues removing the lacquer?
